When I first saw the brilliant paintings of the Old Masters I was struck by the dazzling luminescence they created on canvas, giving their work an almost inner glow or “stained glass” effect.
I decided then and there to study their techniques and chose this style for all of my oil paintings.
The first step is to create a monochromatic underpainting to establish a foundation for contrast and tonal values.Once dry, the glazing begins, applying a transparent layer of paint over another thoroughly dried layer of paint, one color and layer at a time. Although very labour intensive, I found this technique to be the only one from all the mediums that could create this dazzling array of living colour.
